2021 Rome Municipal Election and Social MediaDownload report (in Italian) (July, 28 2021)
Administrative elections will be held in Rome by October 2021, during which the new mayor of the capital will be elected. Among the candidates is Virginia Raggi, outgoing mayor of the 5 Star Movement. The other three favorite candidates are Enrico Michetti, center-right, Roberto Gualtieri, center-left and Carlo Calenda. How much are the four candidates on social media and what are they talking about?
The report collects the main results of a Facebook and Twitter monitoring work in relation to the elections. The data relating to the electoral campaign were considered. The data refer overall to what was published in the period 21 June - 18 July. These are the main evidences among the conclusions of the report in the period considered:
Virginia Raggi dominates on Facebook: Considering the fan base, the ability to generate shares, the number of posts, it can be said that the Raggi occupies about 70% of the political space of the municipal elections on facebook
Calenda leads on Twitter: Considering the mentions, the ability to elicit retweets of their messages, Calenda, albeit with a smaller fun base than the Rays, is first on this social media
Waste is the main topic: Over the weeks we have had a peak for Europeans, but the problem of waste dominates the public debate
The controversial crossroads on waste: Raggi directly attacks Zingaretti on waste; Gualtieri attacks the Raggi and defends Zingaretti; Michetti attacks both Raggi and Zingaretti; Calenda attacks the Raggi and criticizes Zingaretti
La sicurezza, e il microcredito: Oltre al dominante dibattito sui rifiuti, due temi sono specifici di due candidati: Michetti sulla sicurezza e solidarietà alle forze dell'ordine e Raggi con la proposta comunale del microcredito
National themes and territory: Gualtieri deals a lot with the more national themes (vs. Salvini) and Calenda with very specific interventions on the various districts of the city.
